School’s Out For The Summer!
School’s Out for the Summer!
Starting on June 27th, both of our We Rock the Spectrum locations began offering our “School’s Out!” summer mini camp program! Our “School’s Out!” mini camp is a 3-hour drop off program at both our Northtown and Southtown locations on Tuesdays and Thursdays this summer for children ages, 4-12. During the 3-hour mini camp, children are led through sensory-based activities, therapeutic activities and games promoting social interaction, arts and crafts activities, music and movement, as well as plenty of open play gym time! The “Schools Out!” program is led by graduate students within the fields of School Psychology, Speech Language Pathology, and Occupational Therapy. The We Rock teachers provide campers with the opportunity to expand their social skill usage, work on language development, as well as working on the children’s balance and muscle tone.
What Does A Day At Mini Camp Look Like?
The children participating in our WRTS “School’s Out!” program arrive at the gym at 10 am and begin their morning with a half an hour of open play in the gym! During this first 10:00-10:30 block, the campers have the freedom to explore each part of the gym- the sensory room (i.e., calming lights, beanbag chairs, etc.) , the fine motor area (including dress up, train table, puppet show, etc.), and the gross motor area (i.e., zip line, trampoline, swings, monkey bars, etc.). The 10:30-11:00 block consists of “Group Movement” where the campers are led through obstacle courses, yoga, and other movement based activities to work on muscle building and balance. From 11:00-11:30, the campers participate in a craft that matches the weekly theme (i.e., patriotic, beach, camping, etc.). The craft activity allows for the campers to explore their creative side and to build their fine motor abilities! The 11:30-12:00 block is when campers have time to relax and eat their lunch with their peers! The WRTS teachers monitor conversation, and help to facilitate appropriate social interactions between the campers- helping to build their social skills! The 12:00-12:30 block consists of either a social skills or speech and language based lesson and activity. The campers are given opportunities to build these skills that are so developmentally important! To end the day, the campers are given free play from 12:30-1:00 to play in either areas of the Kids Gym!
